How long does it take to set up home move support?
When you move home in the UK you usually need to notify your local council for council tax, your energy suppliers for gas and electricity, your water company, your broadband and phone providers, the DVLA for your driving licence and vehicle log book, your bank and insurers, your GP and dentist, HMRC, and the electoral roll. It is a long list and easy to miss things. Just Move In handles the moving admin for you, including council tax, energy, water and broadband, so you can sort most of it in one call rather than chasing each provider yourself.
Who do I need to tell when I move house in the UK?
To set up utilities in a new home, take meter readings on the day you move in, find out who currently supplies the gas, electricity and water at the property, and open an account in your name with each supplier. You will also need to arrange broadband, which can take a couple of weeks to activate, so it is worth booking early. Just Move In does this for you. In one appointment we set up your energy, water, broadband and council tax, take care of the notifications, and confirm everything in writing. The service is free for movers because our supplier partners pay us, and you are never obligated to take a supplier we suggest.
How do I set up utilities in a new home?
Yes. You need to tell both your old council that you are leaving and your new council that you are arriving, so your council tax is billed correctly. Most councils ask you to complete a change of address form online, and you will usually need your moving dates and the property addresses. If you do not tell them, you can end up paying tax at the wrong property or missing a bill. Just Move In notifies the council as part of your home setup, so your council tax is moved across without you having to fill in each council's form yourself.
Do I have to tell the council I have moved, and how do I do it?
Just Move In is free for home movers. We are paid by our supplier partners when you choose to set up a service, so there is no charge to you and no obligation to go with any supplier we suggest. You are always free to choose your own providers.
How much does Just Move In cost?
Yes. Just Move In is a UK company founded in 2015, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and a certified B Corporation since 2018. We are rated 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot across thousands of reviews. We only use your details to set up the services you ask us to arrange for your move.
Is Just Move In legitimate and safe to use?
The fastest way to sort moving admin is to handle it in one place rather than contacting each provider separately. Just Move In sets up your energy, water, broadband and council tax in a single appointment, usually within one phone call, and confirms everything in writing straight away. Most movers find this saves several hours compared with arranging each service themselves.

General FAQs
We advise to allow up to 6 weeks, from the date the suppliers are sent your change of occupancy notifications, for them to make contact. Suppliers will base the billing period from the date your occupancy started. If you have not received any correspondence after the 6 week period then we would advise chasing this up with them. This can be done directly, or you can contact our Utilities Management Team, who would be happy to assist you with this.
I have now moved in and not heard from any of my suppliers. I am worried about receiving a large bill from them.
We require a confirmed completion date in order to get you booked in for our Home Set Up Appointment. From our experience we do find that up until exchange of contracts has taken place, dates do sometimes change, and we would hate to make you responsible for bills sooner than necessary. If there are specific aspects of the move that you would like to discuss prior to having confirmed dates then please contact us and we would be happy to talk about this further with you. We can be contacted by phone, email or live chat.
I have not completed or exchanged yet and it wont let me book an appointment on my digital account, can you help?
You can send your meter readings directly to us via your online digital account:
https://my.justmovein.com/login (also accessible via navbar)
Alternatively, you can email them to us at move@justmovein.com.
We will forward these on to the relevant suppliers on your behalf. Also note that we only want opening meter readings, not monthly reads.
You could also send these directly to the supplier.
Who do I give my meter readings to?
Suppliers do not usually send out acknowledgements. You should receive correspondence from the suppliers’ by post/email once they have processed our change of occupancy notification, this will include your account details.
Will the supplier send me a letter / email to acknowledge they have received our notifications
As a certified B Corp we pride ourselves on working with partners that have exceptional customer service, due to GDPR once we have helped you to get everything set up any queries would need to be discussed directly with your Broadband provider. Our partners all use multiple channels to make contact more convenient and on your terms, for example, phone, email, and Live Chat . If you are still unable to get in touch, please let us know and we will attempt to contact them on your behalf through a representative.
I cannot get hold of the Broadband supplier you set me up with
We work in partnership with Letting & Estate Agents, as well as other property businesses, providing a Home Set Up Service for their movers. When you sign your tenancy/purchase agreement, our service is included on a complimentary basis, and outlined within the terms & conditions.
Where have you got my details from and why have you got my details?
We are only able to locate and notify the current suppliers in the new property of your occupancy start date. Should you wish to keep your current suppliers, instead of the incumbent ones, you would need to contact your existing suppliers directly to arrange the transfer to the new address.
I want to move my existing suppliers to my new property, can you do this for me?
Some of the recommendations we make such as insurance or broadband, we make a small fee from the providers in a similar way to how a comparison site does.
We are a B-Corp, which means we have to meet higher ethical standards and as such we have a thorough vetting process of recommending providers, ensuring they can provide superior customer service and value.
We also plant a Mangrove Tree for every mover that we help sign up to a service, aiming to make customers moves carbon neutral.
(Mangrove Trees are some of the best trees for absorbing carbon and are therefore great for the environment).
How do you make money if the service is free of charge/ am I obligated to go with your supplier choices?
We advise to allow up to 6 weeks, from the date the suppliers are sent your change of occupancy notifications, for them to make contact. Once they have made contact they will provide you with your account reference number so that you are able to access your online accounts. Note that we do not get notified of your account numbers.
Trying to log into my utility accounts without an account number within 6 weeks.
In the UK utility supplies are not usually switched off, and the change of occupancy notifications we assist with are purely administrative, to ensure you are not billed for the previous occupant. If you are experiencing any issues with your supply we would advise to follow these steps;
1) Check that your gas/electric are not prepayment meters that need to be topped up
2) If the property has been unoccupied for some time check that the supply has not been turned off at the mains/stop cock
3) Contact your landlord/letting agent who are responsible for ensuring you have a working supply
I've moved in and have no hot water/heating/electricity
Please contact the energy supplier directly if you are having issues with the top-up meter within the property. You may also wish to reach out to the landlord/letting agent if you are in a rental property for guidance and assistance.
I've just moved in and I'm having issues with my top up meter
The Home Setup appointment is telephone based, and we do not visit the property.
How will the appointment take place, will you come to my property?
Specific FAQs
Please contact us by email or phone as soon as possible to advise that your move is no longer going ahead. We may not be advised of this by your agency so the only way to ensure that we do not incorrectly send change of occupancy notifications is to keep us updated.
Unfortunately, if we are not made aware of the cancellation within 7 days of the original date, we will send our notifications and you may have to contact the suppliers directly to ensure they do not start billing you. You will also have to cancel any additional services you took out through Just Move In such as broadband and insurance directly with the company.
My move has been cancelled, what should I do?
Please check if your liability start date has changed. You become liable from your tenancy start date (for rentals) or your completion date (for purchases) and you cease to be liable from your tenancy end date (for rentals) or your completion date (for sale). If the only date that has changed is when you are moving yourselves or furniture into.out of the property then we do not need to make any changes - your suppliers need to bill you for your full liability period.
If your liability date has changed, please contact us by email or phone to advise us. We may not be advised of this by your agency so the only way to ensure that we do not send change of occupancy notifications with incorrect information is to keep us updated.
My move date has changed, what should I do?
You can find details and images on how to read your meter on our digital platform.
How do I read my meter?
If you are becoming responsible for council tax for the first time, you will not have a council tax account number yet.
You need to make sure that you have selected the ‘moving into the area’ rather than ‘moving within the area’ if you are moving into a council tax area for the first time.
You may need to register for an online account if you are using the council’s online platform for the first time.
I’m trying to complete the online council tax change of address form but it is asking me for a council tax account number
We take payment details for additional services that you sign up to while on a home set up call with us. This includes broadband, insurance or a Just Move In Premium Account.
We do not set up direct debits for your utilities. We notify suppliers of your move and they should then contact you to confirm the account and provide information on how you can set up your payment plans with them.
I have passed my payment details to JMI. What is this used for?
You will need to open these letters to check what dates are being covered. If they are dates that you are responsible for, then the supplier has not used your details from our notification and you should contact them directly to confirm your details.
If the dates being covered include dates outside of your responsibility, this may be a bill that is meant for the landlord. We recommend that you pass this letter over to your letting agency/landlord.
I have received correspondence addressed to The Owner/Occupier, what do I do?
If you are aware that this is your landlord’s name, we recommend that you do not open the letter and pass it to your letting agency/landlord.
If this is not your landlord, we recommend that you do not open it, write on the front of the envelope ‘Return to sender: no one known by this name at this address’ and put it back into the post (you will not need to add any additional stamps).
I have received correspondence addressed to someone that does not live at this property now, what do I do?
If you have bought a new build or redeveloped property, you should check that the property has passed council tax banding and that all meters (gas, electric and water) have been registered.
If your property and/or meters have not been fully registered, we may still send your change of occupancy notifications to the suppliers of your area, but they will not be able to process them, meaning that your account cannot be opened.
If you are renting a new build or recently redeveloped property, it may be worth checking with your letting agency.landlord that the property and meters have been registered.
I have moved into a new build property, what should I do?
Unfortunately, our system is only set up to notify suppliers in relation to domestic properties where the names on our notifications are the people moving into or out of the property.
Due to the requirement for a landlord to be set up as the default account holder, there are more actions that the supplier needs to undertake than we can advise. We therefore recommend that, if you are a landlord, you contact all the suppliers yourself.
I am a landlord, can Just Move In help me?
Unfortunately we cannot assist with these types of notifications. You will need to contact all the suppliers of the property directly to advise of the death of the account holder. These accounts will then need to go into the estate of the deceased’ until a new account holder takes over the property.
Someone at the property has passed away, what do I need to do?
