Do I need a satellite dish?
As technology has advanced, the need to have a satellite dish installed has reduced, since more and more providers now offer live TV streaming over Wi-Fi. Virgin Media are a prime example - they were once a cable provider and now offer their media services over Wi-Fi without the need for a satellite dish.
For those who don’t need access to hundreds of channels, Freeview TV (which comes built into many new TVs nowadays) is a popular option. It’s a good option as it doesn’t require the installation of a satellite dish because it uses an aerial connection.
The other benefit of this is that it doesn’t require a paid subscription or contract. Whilst Freeview runs off an aerial connection without the need for a dish, Freesat, another option with a larger selection of channels, requires a satellite dish to be installed. A package like Sky Q is great if you want to watch different live TV shows in different rooms of your property, which can be particularly good if you have teenagers. You’re also able to record live TV and even record a program while watching something else in real-time.
Living in a communal building
If you live in a communal building and decide to switch TV providers, depending on the current setup you may be able to access a full satellite service such as Sky Q without installing a dish, as there may be a communal dish that all residents have access to. In cases where a communal dish is not currently installed and the installation of a communal dish isn’t possible, you may be able to have a personal dish installed within the boundary of your own property. For example, if you live in a coach house or a bungalow, it may be a straightforward installation. But you’d need to check with the management company first, and if it’s a leasehold property, you’d have to check the lease itself to see what you’d be allowed to do.
